What about them apples?

Written by hhajjar

We’re starting to feel the first fall chills, see the first leaves begin to fall from the trees, buy apples and pumpkins from our local farmer’s market, wear hiking boots and flannel shirts…What?! Did I write that correctly? Well unfortunately I saw correctly, this past weekend. That kind of outfit belongs in a fall L.L. Bean catalog, hopefully set in the Sierra Mountains. If one has to be smart and witty enough to make it in the work scene in the District, and one does, then one must also be fashionable enough to make it in the District’s fall season as well.

In the one year that I’ve lived in the District, I have seen a number of fabulous stores and restaurants open. Before I moved here, Washington D.C. was rated last on Vogue’s list of fashionable cities. With the rate of this city’s facelifts, I can only imagine where the District will be on the list of fashionable cities, a year from now (five years from now if we continue to see D.C.-natives looking like Paul Bunyan). It’s time we took District fashion up a notch or two, just like the restaurant, club and shopping scenes.

Women’s fashion this year evokes an extreme sense of power, which as you know, is perfectly suited for Washington D.C. Heels are higher than ever, stronger and bolder fabrics, such as velvet, are commonplace, and bags, hats and glasses are so large, you would think André the Giant designed them, himself. Leave the subtly romantic, ethnic, peasant girl persona you stepped into this summer behind, and step into towering heels by Christian Lacroix (Neiman Marcus) or Michael Kors (Intermix) for an almighty governess look. This season, designers exaggerated sizes, fabrics and details in order to make the fabulous presence of a woman all the more noticeable.

Where does the power-hungry District female go to indulge? Intermix and H&M should be your first stops. I strategically put both together because they’re geographically near each other and because once you buy one item at Intermix, you’ll probably want to suit the rest from H&M. Legitimately, however, both caught the essence of this season’s trends and amplified them by selling over-the-top thick sweaters, short beaded dresses, full skirts and swing coats. If you feel like venturing, visit Periwinkle in the Del Ray area of Alexandria. Many politicas visit this recently opened store; the dresses and shoes are unique and you’ll be sure to find something fun to mix into your wardrobe.

Men’s fashion this season asks the typical male to pull out the wild side in him. Grow your hair out a little, buy a velvet suit, cowboy boots, a funky t-shirt or a ruffled oxford. You may think my asking this of you is like asking you to go get a manicure and watch a chick flick with the girls. I understand, I like my men manly too – so try and buy one funky piece this season, whatever it might be. I guarantee you there’ll be some party or benefit you’ll want to go to, where you’ll want to wear a Doors t-shirt under a tweed J.Crew blazer (top it off with Chuck Taylors if you’re daring). Urban Outfitters and Annie Creamcheese (vintage) are nice and easy places for you to look for such items. Else is even nicer if you’re craving designers.

We gotta match them beautiful fall apples.
