PLOT AND POINTERS:
Successful and single Kate Holbrook (Fey) wakes up one day with babies on the brain and nothing will dissuade her from riding the mommy train. She is confident and prepared to do it alone until she hits a wall of fertility mishaps. With her eyes on the prize despite her lady troubles, she searches to find the perfect surrogacy partner. Enter Angie (Poehler) and her common-law husband (Shepard), both eager and prepared for a preggo payday. After Angie becomes pregnant, Kate tries to become a hands-on birthing partner to Angie… which includes allowing Angie move in with her. Comedy ensues as uptight Kate clashes with playful Angie in the ultimate battle of the expectant mothers. (PG-13, 1hr 36mins)

Professional golfer and former U.S. Open champion Jim Furyk is also an alumnus of my high school. Our 15th, and possibly worst, President James Buchannan hails from my neck of the woods. Sports, politics, and academics are well represented by the citizens of Lancaster, Pennsylvania.

Ok, it’s official. I have not written an article in…forever? That’s how it feels as least. It’s ok, you can admit it, you haven’t missed me one bit. I’m ok with that. Honestly, no big deal. No one is worrying over here.
Anyhoo. To get this column back on track I have a bit of house-cleaning to do and then I can start this year off right. I should add, “Writing weekly columns for Hillzoo.com,” onto my resolutions list (not that I really have a list or anything…even though I have heard that you are 80% more likely to accomplish a goal if you write it down). So here we go! Let’s go back, back, back to October of 2006 (imagine the screen becoming fuzzy and that magical “back to the future” sound that Wayne always did in Wayne’s World).

Earmarks are a grand tradition in the glittery marbley building we call the Capitol. Long before the :achm: relatively enlightened age of today, they went to feed the hungry mouths back home No, not the poor, I’m talking about old school political machines.
For years, patronage and kickbacks helped MoC’s get elected. Bringing home the bacon didn’t just mean having a new bridge in your district – it meant getting to choose who built the new bridge in your district. And possible who got the insurance contract on the bridge, and whose law firm got the legal fees. Etc. This isn’t the time or the place to describe the mechanics of a 20th century political machine, but to get a sense for how politics operated well into the late 60’s and in some places the 70’s and later read Caro’s biography or Robert Moses.
